History of Kappa League:
Under the leadership of Mel Davis, the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter designed a program in 1969 to help young men grow and develop their leadership talents in every phase of human endeavor. The program provided both challenging and rewarding experiences which richly enhanced their lives. Membership was open to male students of the tenth through the twelfth grades. The Fraternity sought to help these young men to achieve worthy goals for themselves and make constructive contributions to their community when leadership roles become their responsibilities.
Shreveport Kappa League:
Shreveport Kappa League is a non profit youth mentoring program designed to help young high school male students develop their leadership talents. This program is mentored by Shreveport Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. The activities provide both challenging and rewarding experiences to enhance their lives. The goal of the League is to develop and help the students achieve worthy goals for themselves as well as make a meaningful contributions to their communities.
Since the fundamental purpose of Shreveport Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is achievement, it is the Fraternity's primary purpose to help the young men of the Kappa League achieve worthy goals and to make constructive contributions to their communities when they become leaders.
Stage 1:
Male students interested in membership must meet the requirements set forth by Shreveport Alumni Chapter. Prospective members must attend the official informational meeting and complete/ submit the official membership application. The interested applicant must participate in an interview with Kappa League members and Advisor utilizing official interview questions approved by the Shreveport Alumni Chapter. The Kappa League members will vote and select the potential new members.
Qualifications for New Membership
- Must be between the ages of 13 -18 in the Shreveport, and surrounding areas
- Can not exceed the 12th grade of high school for initial membership
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 (78%) or better
- Must complete an official membership application (including Parental Permission / Contract form)
- Must attend a new membership meeting
- Must pay a membership fee
Continuing Membership Requirements
- Must maintain a cumulative GPA of 78% or better
- Must attend and participate in community service projects and events
- Must have no more than five (5) unexcused absences for the year
- Must be willing to attend bimonthly meetings and tutoring sessions
- Must pay dues
- Must adhere to the Code of Conduct
**Any violation of the above requirements can result in dismissal from the program.
Stage 2:
All sessions are to be held on Saturdays, except for any special activity that may be during the week. During the sessions, the Kappa Leaguers learn Parliamentary procedures, meeting facilitation, and work on presentation, written, oratorical, and interpersonal skills through various activities associated with the operation of the Kappa League club. The club activities, workshops/lectures, fundraisers, and field trips combined are designed to assist in the growth and development of the Kappa Leaguer. The Kappa Leaguers are involved in planning and executing at least two (2) community service activities during the school year. The Kappa Leaguers will also select and vote on at least two (2) field trips for the year. Field trips selected must adhere to the goals and purposes of the Kappa League.
Annually (May) elections will be held and the Kappa Leaguers are instructed on the duties of each office. Committees are formed for planning and coordinating specific activities.
Future Plans:
The Shreveport Kappa League will be hosting its Kappa League Beautillion. The purpose of the ceremony is to celebrate momentous experiences and awards of Kappa League members throughout the school year. The Shreveport Alumni Chapter will also provide a senior member with a scholarship. The Kappa League Beautillion is tentatively scheduled for the month of April (Annually). A souvenir booklet will be a project for the fundraiser.
